Don’t fret, this page maybe massive with various models and tips but we do have a few short answers for you! If you have a lawn that is less than or around half an acre then your on the right page! If through your garden is larger, then you may be more interested and better served by our buying guide covering the best riding lawn mowers available right now.
Now that we have established you’re are looking for a lawn mower that is self-propelled (or even pushed) then you will likely be best served by our Top Pick – Honda HRX217K5VKA. A close runner-up is the Husqvarna 7021P, the only real issue keeping it from being our top pick is the reports of the mower not lasting as long as you would hope it to for some buyers (this does seem o be a rare report, but it is worth noting). We have also been looking at the best budget mower options which happen to be easily the Greenworks 25022 or the WORX WG775 – for us it is too close to call but the WORX does look a bit easier to handle with its weight being almost half of the Greenworks 250022.
Best Lawn Mower For 2018
Top Pick We have a full review below but it is my opinion that this Honda is the best lawn mower on the market right now. Buyers seem to love this lawn mower and it comes with a 5 year warranty to keep your mind at ease. It is a bit more expensive than the budget options but based on customer feedback it looks like the extra money spent results in a better quality item that will last longer.
Best Budget Mower With the budget option many will be expecting either lack of features, less power or even poor build quality. With the Greenworks 25022 you get none of that. It is a well built and solid mower with power and performance that is above expectations for the price. It is a little more restrictive with height adjustments but that is something I'm sure many of you will not care too much about. Something to note is the quality of the cut grass at the end, it's not going to look terrible but it also won't look as good as it could do - but that is reflected in the great price.
Runner Up There is no specific reason that the Husqvarna 7021P isn't as good but some buyers have commented about the warranty not being as flexible as they would have hoped. That being said Husqvarna do make good quality garden products so it would be a surprise to find many people that have a bad experience with this lawn mower. It comes loaded with all the usual features and is very powerful engine to cut through almost anything you put in front of it!
Poulan Pro PR675AWD
Runner Up This is a great option if you have a small to medium yard. Any larger then I would start to lean towards the Honda or Husqvarna. I have heard that many seem to love the Poulan Pro as it makes it easy to get through those though to mow areas that we all seem to have in our yards.
One of the more budget friendly and affordable options. The Lawn-Boy 17732 gives you a high quality mow with an easy to use feature set. The whole thing itself is very small and would be ideal for those that struggle for space. With that in mind it it best for small to medium sized yards.
EGO Power+ 20″ 56V Lithium-ion Battery
Best Electric Mower When I say this is the best, I really mean it. It might be battery operated and cordless but it gives just as much power as many of the gas options on this page, it has short charging time with it's very own Rapid Charger. It also gives you 3 options (side discharge, rear bagging, and mulching). The price is a steal for the quality, power, ease of use and features that it comes with.
Runner Up for Best Budget Mower Another great option for a budget lawn mower. Overall the build quality is high and just what you would expect from a reliable brand like WORX. It is personally my favorite of the budget mowers but one reason I don't make top of the list is the mower isn't suited for anything bigger than a small/medium yard and it may take this mower a little longer to deal with some thicker areas of grass.
Great States 415-16
Best Reel Mower Do I really need to say any more? Ok... The Great States has 3 height options and a great price, that alone already sets it above probably 95% of the other reel mowers that I have seen. Overall cut quality looks surprisingly better than I expected but one part that really annoys me about this mower is it's lack of bag! Having just mowed the lawn I really don't want it sitting in my garage or garden shed without some sort of bag - of course something you can deal with.
Electric, Gas or Battery Powered Mower?
Much like chainsaws, you have the option of buying an electric, gas and even a battery powered lawn mower. As you can expect there are various differences between each type but all three are great options!
Electric Powered and Corded
Electric lawn mowers are in many ways just as good as a gas. They give you a clean and close cut but being lighter they allow for easier manoeuvring making them popular for anyone that doesn’t want to deal with a heavy gas powered model. Electric powered are also very eco-friendly, they don’t need much power, maintenance or even too much experience to use.
There are downsides with the most obvious being you limited based on the length of the cord, or extension cords (where allowed!). The cords can get in the way and can be very dangerous if accidental run over with the blades active. We recommend these to be used on small to medium lawns.
If you are in the marker for the most powerful type of mower then gas is your best option. It’s a well-known fact that these types are great for tougher lawns, grass and weeds. In most cases, Gas powered ones are generally great options for small, medium and large lawns. In my opinion, it’s a personal preference in most cases but if you have an uneven, sloped or tough lawn then gas should be on your shortlist.
The downsides are fairly obvious. The types are incredibly noisy, emit fumes, potential breakdowns and you will have to maintain the engine much like anything else that has an engine. The use of a gas mower is arguably a better experience, assuming you are happy enough to deal with the potential cons of owning one.
Battery Powered and Cordless
Owning a battery powered lawn mower is no longer an inconvenience. In recent years the advances in technology have meant the cordless and battery powered models provide the same high quality, close and clean cut as gas and corded models. Many battery powered models are considerable better, yes, BETTER than some cheap electric and gas powered models. The battery can usually last between 30 and 90 mins depending on the size and battery as well as the quality of the brand and build.
One of the great selling points of these types is they are usually very lightweight compared to gas. They also provide an easier operation and better experience with a start/stop button for starting the engine.
My Top Pick For Best Lawn Mower – Honda HRX217K5VKA
The Honda HRX217K5VKA is arguably the best gas lawn mower on the market right now. It has great reviews from buyers on Amazon and even Popular Mechanics rank it incredibly high in there tests. What makes the Honda our top pick is it’s mix of keeping the cost low, high build quality and features that you will find to be so useful that you won’t want to go back! It comes locked and loaded with an impressive 190cc engine, rear wheel drive (a blessing for tall grass or hills!), dual blade cutting that helps mow the most stubborn of lawns.
For added ease of use, it also allows you to side-discharge, mulch the grass or even bag it all. The ability to do all 3 of these is what makes this mower of the more home friendly.
Something to keep in mind is if you have any issues with the Honda HRX217K5VKA you are safe in the knowledge that it comes with a 5-year warranty. If that doesn’t tell you that this mower won’t last the test of time then I don’t know what will!
Does that not sell it for you? Well, have you heard of the Versamow System? It is exclusive to Honda’s HRX mowers and it allows you to control how much of the grass clippings you want to bag and how much you want to mulch, all at the touch of a button – well actually a dial. This one feature can mean the difference between finishing the mowing and getting back into the house or having to spend the next hour raking up the clippings. You can read more about the Versamow System here.
Conclusion: If you have the budget for the Honda HRX217K5VKA then go for it, you won’t be disappointed with its features, build quality and it’s super long 5-year warranty. Many consider this to be the premium walk behind lawn mower for its features, build quality, ease of use and of course it price!
My Runner-Up – Husqvarna 7021P
I have to be completely honest, the runner-up was a difficult decision. I didn’t want to list a list of 5 runner-ups, so I have picked what I consider the best runner-up. For more runner-ups, you can use the comparison table above.
The Husqvarna 7021P is a great option, by no means is it the best gas lawn mower but at its price point, you shouldn’t expect it to be. What I do expect is to get value for money, a good reliable mower and something will last a couple of years at least. The Husqvarna 7021P seems to tick all of those boxes. Out of the interest of being 100% honest, there are a few reports of these mowers having issues after some time if I am completely honest again though… These issues do have to be expected when it is arguably one of the best sellers there will naturally be a few that pick up issues. With that in mind, this lawn mower comes with a 2-year warranty for parts and labour, so it should be covered.
The Husqvarna 7021P comes with a GCV160 engine which is 160cc and a cutting width of 21 inches, which is a perfect size. The Husqvarna 7021P is a bit on the heavy side as you would expect but nothing out of the ordinary. There is a rear wheel drive and push version of these, both are great models but we do prefer the rear wheel drive for easier use. The Husqvarna 7021P comes with a nifty and responsive speed control and single lever deck adjustment. The mower has everything you need and would expect.
Conclusion: The Husqvarna 7021P is a great option for those looking to get real value for money. It isn’t the best and it isn’t the cheapest but it will certainly do you for a couple of years making it my value for the money option as well as the runner-up to the Top Pick.
Best Electric & Battery Powered Lawn Mower – EGO Power+ 20″ 56V Lithium-ion Cordless
If like many, you are wanting your next lawn mower to be electric or if you looking for the best battery powered lawn mower, you’re in luck! EGO have gone the whole hog and provided the best electric and battery lawn mower on the market in 2018. The EGO Power+ 20 is arguably better than many of the gas lawn mowers we have researched and is one of the only rechargeable mowers that can provide you with an experience on par with gas-powered counterparts. This, of course, is a big deal and selling feature as these electric units have previously been considered “not as good”.
You have 3 battery options with 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah and 7.5Ah which mean the battery should last between 45mins and 70mins based on the battery you choose. Based on most reviews of the EGO the mower will last more than long enough to cut both a medium sized front and back lawn before needing to be recharged. Being the best rechargeable lawn mower means the EGO is more than capable of tackling even overgrown grass with weeds with no trouble at all.
Something to keep in the note is the EGO also allows for flexible storage options with a folding handle. In my opinion, and many other’s, the folding handle is the best you can find. The space you save by folding the handle is truly incredible.
Why would someone choose a cordless lawn mower?
There are many reasons why someone would pick a battery lawn mower over one that is gas powered. Everything from personal choices and environment can make the decision for someone, but let’s list a few of the most common ones.
Helping the environment – Almost everything is moving towards battery and electricity instead of gas. Just think about the growth and increasing interest in electric cars. There is no question that a battery-powered model will help the environment when compared to a gas equivalent.
Noise – Something many people notice is the reduction in noise. Electric and battery mowers do still make noise but they are clearly not as loud and intrusive as a gas powered engine.
Storage – One of the most common points that I think many people forget about is storage. With no fuel tank to worry about it makes your storage choices easier. Battery powered lawn mowers also don’t have a cord that you need to struggle with meaning it is easy to store away and then set back up.
Performance – As I have mentioned there is an understanding that electric and battery mowers aren’t as good for cutting as they’re not as powerful. This may have been true many years ago but in 2018 the difference is either non-existent or negligible. Hell, some of the electric mowers perform better than other gas models.
Ease-of-use – Simple to get them up and running. Charge the battery beforehand then press a couple of buttons and you’re cutting the grass in seconds. No need to fumble about filling fuel tanks or driving to buy a tank of gas.
At the end of the day, choosing your next mower should be based on your requirements. It would be worthwhile keeping these battery and electric mowers in mind if you requirements fit with a battery operated model.
How Exactly I Picked The Best Lawn Mower For 2018
It is almost that time of year again, if you’re like me then you dread going into the garage and looking out the mower. For me, there are two reasons. Firstly, I generally just don’t like mowing our lawn with years of back problems I just feel a riding mower is more my style. The second reason is always that somehow our cheap gas lawn mower from the year before has always become repairable, a symptom of buying the cheapest model I can get my hands on every year though!
Every year without fail I buy a brand new mower saying I will buy one that is more reliable, will last a few years and won’t break after 6 months. Then, I run out of time at work, buy the cheapest one on the way home one Friday evening and regret the purchase within minutes of starting. I am determined to make 2018 different, I have already researched the best mowers available and lined up the ones that look best for my needs. It is the one reason I have decided to write this guide, I suspect most of you are the same and don’t really know which model is the best fit for you.
